“Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime IS death.”
–Winston Smith from George Orwell’s 1984
If you needed more evidence that most of our “esteemed” members of Congress are members of a criminal class of ruling elites, who regard the likes of us in the poor and working classes with the disdain most people reserve for cockroaches, look no further than H.R. 1955.
93% of the filth “representing” us in the House voted in favor of the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. Once this vile piece of legislation sails through the Senate and the sociopath on Pennsylvania Ave gleefully slaps his endorsement on it, the mechanisms will be in place for our lords and masters to initiate programs that will make Cointelpro and the murder of Fred Hampton look like child’s play.
According to our “betters” amongst the US plutocracy, we can’t afford the “luxury” of dissent. We are waging war on terrorism, a threat to the continued existence of the American Way of Life, which we know to be non-negotiable. Besides, dissidents simply present an obstacle to the wholesale terrorism we are inflicting on entire nations so that we can bring them “freedom and democracy.” As Bill O’Reilly suggested on Faux News last night, the only “sane thing” to do is to support the troops. And war protestors need to be arrested. So whether we are committing heinous war crimes or not, ignore your conscience, root for the home team, thank a vet and shut the fuck up!
Under the soon-to-be law Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, state and local police will join forces with the FBI, DHS, ICE, and like fascist entities to eradicate ideologies, plans, Internet “terrorist-related propaganda,” and any other “noxious weeds” which might spring forth to “threaten” the “aesthetics” of the immaculate grounds of our glorious corporatocracy, amply fertilized by the corpses of the millions of victims of our imperial and neoliberal conquests.
Within the Orwellian construct of H.R. 1955, I have not decided whether I am a violent radical or a homegrown terrorist. Perhaps the powers that be will deem that I am both. Were I neither, that would mean that I had sold my soul and taken the last refuge of a scoundrel. What a nightmare that would be!
Yes, America, I am a thought criminal. Consider my confession:
1. While I have deep reservations about the death penalty for a number of reasons, I will gladly suspend those misgivings once the gradually intensifying social unrest reaches critical mass. Little would please me more than to see the likes of Bush, Cheney, Condi, O’Reilly, Perle, Clarence Thomas, Bolton, Negroponte and a host of others who have committed and enabled some of the most grievous crimes in history dangling lifelessly from the end of a rope.
2. I view Zionism as a mental disease. The criminal apparatuses which pass themselves off as governmental structures in DC and Jerusalem do need to be “wiped off the map.” A majority of the constituencies in both the US and Israel view their governments with disgust and contempt. Both ruling bodies are infected with supporters of the Zionist plague and frequently implement policies which serve to inflict abject misery on millions of human beings.
3. While I am not a direct participant, I wish the Animal Liberation Front great success in their endeavors. Under our depraved system of capitalism, the property ALF destroys and the profits they stymie are sacred. Yet the billions of sentient beings they champion are mere objects which we can wantonly subject to maiming, torture and death.
4. I loath the Holocaust industry. Zionists have hijacked and exploited a horrific tragedy, cynically employed it to enact their own ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians, and used it as a justification for the continued existence of the monstrous state of Israel. While it is profoundly tragic that the Nazis tortured and murdered so many Jews, there were also significant numbers of Romas, homosexuals, and socialists who suffered similar fates. Besides, there have been many genocides throughout human history, including the one we have been inflicting upon Iraqis through the Gulf War, Clinton’s heinous economic sanctions, and the present illegal occupation.
5. I long for the collapse of the American Empire. While we can’t predict what will arise to fill the ensuing vacuum, at least it will present an opportunity for us to create a more humane and just sociopolitical order.
6. I believe the world would be a much better place if Wall Street and Madison Avenue ceased to exist. The greed, narcissism, and exploitation spewing forth from the entities and industries they represent are toxins to the human soul.
7. I admire and support demonized people and entities such as Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, and Hamas as true champions of victimized people. Our ruling class portrays them as “threats” and “terrorists” because they have the cajones to stand up to the biggest, meanest, and most powerful bullies in history. Are they perfect? No. Are they admirable? Definitely.
8. I despise the American flag. Since 9/11, it’s nearly ubiquitous presence has helped foster a cancerous form of patriotism and nativism. The “Stars and Stripes” has become a symbol of imperialism, oppression, and state terrorism. And yes, I have burned an American flag.
9. I consider capitalism to be an abomination and a crime against humanity, the rest of the sentient beings on the planet, and the Earth. I am aggressively pursuing its demise through my intellectual efforts, including writing, educating, motivating, and publishing on my brain-child, Thomas Paine’s Corner at https://bestcyrano.org/thomaspaine/.
10. I have known, befriended, and helped so-called “illegal” immigrants, and will continue to do so. People flooding the United States from Mexico are doing so because of the abject poverty caused by our neoliberal economic terrorism, NAFTA, and our support of their right wing oligarchs who joyfully implement the Washington Consensus, a recipe for misery for the poor and working class amongst their people. “Illegal immigration” is a forced migration caused by the ever-growing hubris and avarice of our moneyed elite.
Much to the chagrin of those of you who remain enslaved by the intellectual chains of your indoctrination or who are dedicated reactionaries, I have as much right to remain in the United States as you do. And I’m not going anywhere voluntarily. So save your emails offering me passage on a slow boat to Russia. One thing we can probably agree upon though is the sanctity of the Second Amendment. My .38 caliber and 12 gauge are ready. Just in case I need to exercise my right to defend family, hearth and home.
Meanwhile, let’s see if a thought criminal like me, who has committed no felonies, has no history of violence, and has formulated no plans to foment violence or engage in violent acts becomes a target of the Bush Regime’s Orwellian apparatus once they have read my confession.

We at Cyrano’s and Thomas Paine’s Corner need your help! Our editors and writers work hard to provide you with the most original and diverse progressive content on the Internet. We are fiercely determined to provide enough people with a sound political education so that, in authentic democratic fashion, the will not only liberate their minds, but eventually cure the economic and moral disease afflicting our nation.
We derive no financial remuneration for our efforts to build a social order based on justice, democracy, compassion, and humanity. Isn’t that your desire as well? In fact, it costs us money to maintain our Internet presence.
If each of you donated a mere $5 a month—a trifling sum these days, the price of pack of smokes or a fancy beer—we would have enough money to cover our overhead, upgrade our server capacity, expand our audio offerings, and begin to provide you with compelling video content.
By helping us in this fashion you will be assisting the birth of a new type of American democracy, one which, genuinely rooted in the ideals we profess to honor, will finally measure up to its promise.
For you, for us, for everything that you think needs defending, make a donation that fits your budget today by clicking here:
Yo, Jason, what a manifesto!
Where do I sign on?
You have the guts and mind-power to put into words and post/publish what many of us think and feel.
You remind us again of William Blake’s prophetic words: “The tigers of wrath are wiser than the horses of instruction.”
Orwell, Paine, Thoreau, Swift, Marx, Brecht and all the sacred crew would applaud your passionate intensity.
Take a bow.
Then, encore.
Bravo, Jason! Well said. The betrayal of Congress and the crimes of this so-called administration are beyond dispute Nuremberg class by any impartial standard. With the aid of a wholly complicit, bankrupt media, this mob has led the nation down the road of malignant perdition and sociopathic destruction in every conceivable way, from mindless flagwaving atrocities such as the mugging of Iraq under false pretenses (the convenient “War on Terror”), which has already cost more than a million Iraqi lives and tens of thousands of casualties in our own misguided armed forces, to an evisceration of the Constitution and the remnants of our democracy, while more grotesque adventures are being planned in the open, such as war on Iran, Syria, and possibly other nations all the way to Russia and beyond. It’s war without end. And let’s not forget this mafia’s cavalier attitude toward the rape of nature and the collapse of all biosystems we continue to witness in practically every corner of the Earth.
This utterly indefensible, rotten and transparently hypocritical cabal has got to go. How much more evidence do the American people need to act and put a stop to this insufferable mess? It has been said before, and it bears saying once again: What passes for leadership in America these days is a disgrace, a stain on the honor of every man, woman and child in the United States, and a cruel mockery of the examples and sacrifices of countless heroes—true heroes—known and unknown, who dedicated and gave their lives so that this nation would at last be worthy of its promise.
—P. Greanville, Editor in Chief, Cyrano’s Journal
Surely all of us who have contributed to Jason’s arena of outlawed thoughts are already branded as thought criminals. It’s amazing that so much of Orwell’s predictions are coming true in this era. I can’t decide whether he saw the future, or if the “lords” of our universe just liked his ideas.
The thought crime legislation guarantees that we are soon to be silenced. Whether we will be silenced by bars and chain link fences, or merely censored from the Internet, remains to be seen. Time is short. One way or another, through homegrown terrorist legislation, or via the “hate crime” rider on the defense bill, silence about the true causes of the next war (Iran) is being prepared by Congress.
If stopping Israel from pulling our trigger is the only way to prevent the world war that will usher in the American police state, then we must set the anti-war movement against Israel. Mearsheimer and Walt have provided a good place to start.
Like Jason, most of us here are just as concerned about breaking the yoke of elite dominance over our lives, for the future’s sake. Maybe disrupting their war plans will have a desired domino effect, rippling all the way back to the overlords, shaking their iron grip over our political process. Maybe such a great shaking will open eyes and give sanity a chance.
We have to cause revolutionary changes, without the force of arms.
Wow! I couldn’t have said it better myself. I applaud your courage to say it like this with such convicted candor.
I saw someone else ask where to sign on. I say count me in, too. But let’s look for alternatives to living the way we do. There has to be a way to boycott the capitalistic ventures we all feed whether we want to or not. We all use electricity, telephones, cell phones, internet, etc. We all pay for our water, food, housing- the very substances of survival. And many of us pay the taxes that provide salaries for the ruling elite. How do we rebel against all this?
Well done Jason. I agree with you, of course.
There’s a few old sayings that come to mind:
“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death”
“Live Free or Die”
I applaud. I too long for the collapse of a system which does not and has never worked for the people in my lifetime (61). Whatever we have to face, we can if we face it head onas responsible and humane people. Collapse and rebuildingoffers something far better. The freedom to use our creativity, responsibility and compassion to make it work for those who are likewise commited. What makes it more horrific is the “ruling class” and their efforts to keep us in slavery. As I said in another post, we don’t need a leader, we need everyone to be a leader. Whatever it takes. I am non-violent,but I will defend my home and community if necessary.
Mr. Miller:
Of course you know exactly who the masterminds behind Zionism etc. are. I am curious why you never mention about them. Is it because your inheritance is more important than your mission? Or is it just because you are coward?
Jason,
Way radical. I have been wondering about the HomeGrownTerrorist. Wouldn’t that apply to people Like Robertson who advocate killing heads of other states? Isn’t he self-radicalized?
What is radicalization? If we choose the root word radi’, we can equate radicalization to placement on the radius, or on the circle. Now since we assume the right and left to be on opposite sides, we might find them standing back to back on their side of the circle. In the circle, what does it mean to be self radicalized, and what does that mean to my most excellent education in the United States, especially when it involves the likes of Thomas Jefferson who’s command to me as a decendant American is to be self radicalized.
The only way it all makes sense is with a dialectic of elite and lowly. The founders of our country recognized two kinds of elite. One kind was the born to it kind. But even with that, a person born to a family deemed elite, must prove themselves worthy of the title. Thus, to be deemed worthy to the current group of elite in power, the current politicians must be tough on Iraq and Iran. It is fun to watch the puppets dance very much the same way as do the actors for our pleasure. Follow the money. But in reality the dialectic is dead, self destroyed by missing the bulk of the facts that there is always a third option in play.
Jason, you didn’t need to make your public confession. Your actions and deeds flow before you. I once created “The Martha’s Vineyard Liberation Army.” Talk about self radicalization! Actually, it was a ploy to get free subscriptions to The Guardian, Rat, The East Village Other, LA Free Press, and I believe a few more. I was young, about 20, and was deeply fascinated by the plethora of sexual ads in all those papers. The results were my mail was opened for awhile. I guess they got to read a few written arguements with my father, a couple of love letters now and then, and whomever was doing it was intentionally sloppy to let me know they were opening the mail. How dissappointed they must have been. I was just a suburban college drop out working every day in the construction trade of carpentry. I paid my taxes, went to bed early, hunted deer, and helped run the Not Guilty Bookshop with Derek Pell. He’s one of the old guard self radicalizers that went off to cynical humor then product testing here on the web. Google Dr. Bey, and Wombat, somewhere in there he shows up. He used to be quite a self radicalized individual. I think now he’s just a dad. He used to chide me on my lack of revolutionary zeal because I was free scamming my national education. Hey, that’s what Abbie taught me to do! I said I was the Minister of Information. On the other hand, I worked in a government defense plant during Vietnam and had security clearance to do that. I wonder if my ploy described above sullied my security.
I guess at sixty this coming January, I’m being given the message that there won’t be a retirement, there’s no getting out of debt as an American, if I complain about it I get tasered, branded self radicalized, and sent to a Halliburton retirement community, where the boys of the Amway fortune in the nomenclature of black water; oh how appropriately apocalyptic, will water board me for their pleasure.
Maybe you’d better call before you knock on my door. I’m beginning to understand David Koresh. That let’s me off the hook. Since Reno and the media inculcated me about that one, I’m not self radicalized.
On the other hand, if there is a conspiracy of Iranians to bring car bombs to Starbuck’s in a neighborhood near me; West Portal, Miraloma, Noe Valley, oh, such sweet peaceful places, I hope that the money being spent finds them out first. I am a Warrior of Peace and Love and hope to never have to participate in anymore violence than I have already, mostly inflicted upon me.
I don’t think comparing Hugo Chavez with Fidel Castro is fair. Hugo Chavez is a much more proactive leader. Castro’s Cuba was horrendous in its treatment of GLBT people.
I divorced myself from Comcast, does that imply I am self radicalizing?
You bet, sweetie, I’m heading for the nearest circle with my drum, rattle, and flute. Is that armed and dangerous?
Robin
Jason, would you like some cheese with that whine?
Lauraj400—i can’t stand this socialist asshole, Miller…….but at least he showed some balls here…..i missed the “whine” in his rant…….were you meaning to respond to a different article, or are you just fucking stupid? People like you give the right wing a bad name!
Jason and everyone who agrees, what say we hike on over to Greenland once the polar ice melts enough to set up homesteads and start a NewAmerica? This entire situation is like a bad re-run of the civil war. You have the blind faith-based idiots willing to swallow corporatist media hook line and sinker against people who believe in love, community, and tolerance.
By merely posting and visiting radical web sites such as this, my mail has been opened for over a year now. Also quite sloppily. The information age has ushered in Big Brother and now we have the newly formed ThoughtPolice, greeeaaaaatttt.
I ask you, how much power and wealth does one need? The Empire has gone mad. They poisened Michael Ruppert to shut him the hell up Jason. I truly hope you don’t suddenly go “missing” someday soon.
What news media source has even dared to feature this news that freedom of speech is no longer part of our constitution? A big WOW…
Amen Doc! I think Laura is just plain stupid for trying the first snide comment that came to her little mind. But you need to eat some lettuce, too, and pronto. You appreciate the writer’s gutsiness; he obviously “has a pair” as they used to say in the old USMC, where I spent more time I care to admit. But your anti-socialist prejudice is ridiculous. If Miller is a “socialist asshole,” what are you? A libertarian or some other sort of rightwing asshole? And if you are, why waste time reading him? And one more thing. No, she doesn’t give the rightwing a bad name, she gives away the right wing by confirming their stupid, petty and underhanded ways…
Way to go Jason, what a right-on article. I’m a Libertarian asshole who likes Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, if not for their own fascism, at least for standing up to America’s Fascism. I believe in an America where ideas from the right and the left can be discussed, and the people can decide for themselves which ideas they like best. If the majority wants a socialist state, fine. If a more libertarian state, fine. The opposition always has the right to sway the opinion of the voters. That’s America.
The assault on our freedoms includes TV, the unEducation of the citizenry, Soma in all its permutations, etc, etc. An unresponsive public, unable to think for themselves as individuals, and just as scared of Restless Leg Syndrome as they are of Islamic terrorism, is going to relinquish their inalienable rights without a whimper.
So I support everyone’s right to believe in their own political ideologies. The one thing everyone should be able to agree on is that our civil liberties, our moral freedoms, our inalienable RIGHTS, are being stolen from us. This transcends ideology. These are inalienable rights. That means that when they are curtailed by any power, that power has no legitimacy, and it is NO CRIME to fight to retain, or regain, those rights. No doubt such a belief makes me a thought criminal as well, Jason.
The Spanish Republicans lost the Civil War because they couldn’t focus on fighting their common enemy, Franco. We should take care to not fall into the same trap.
Zionism is merely another term for, or type of, imperialism. Imperialism is the modus operandi of capitalism, the cancer of which corporations are the visible tumors.
When Blackwater Security, capitalism’s S.S., comes for Jason Miller, I, like Spartacus’ fellow slaves in the 1960 film, “Spartacus”, will stand up and say to the mercenary centurians, “I am Spartacus/Jason Miller”. And then I expect the rest of you to step up, one by one, and say “I am Spartacus/Jason Miller” and on and on and on and on and on and on, ad infinitum. Enough is enough is enough.
REFORM SCHOOL
Bring it down.
The placebo of reform
is a diversion.
Bring it down.
The anodyne of reform
defuses discontent.
Bring it down.
The masturbation of reform
prevents opposition’s
becoming coalition.
Bring it down.
Pie in the sky promises
crush ideals
in capitulation to the system -
capitalism.
Bring it down.
Or your descendants
will bring themselves
to their bribed and bought-off knees
to service parasitic cannibal descendants
of our bloated plutocracy.
Bring it down.
Note bene, my little listening FBI man, that that oath you and our erstwhile “representatives” took was to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America - NOT the Bush Administration. Note bene again, NOWHERE do we advocate the overthrow of the legitimate government of the United States of America, which was hijacked in November of 2000, only its restoration and the removal of the capitalist supremacist cabal that did the hijacking for its own titillation and enrichment. Do your sworn duty and take them into custody. NOW!!!
Vi Ransel/Spartacus/Jason Miller/ a Patriot
A bully is a bully! You condemn Bush and praise Castro??? Is a “lesser” bully okay if he’s a socialist; does he get a pass? You make some righteous points that lose energy when your self-righteous (?) indignation devolves into another anti-capitalist rant!
Mr. Miller: you validate the Animal Liberation Front terrorists! What happens when they set someone’s business on fire to find out later that some night watchman was sleeping in the back room? These “people” use animal rights as an excuse to blow things up!
Patrice:
Your comments speak to the current state of affairs and are accessible to the masses which you claim to want to reach.
Gary Corseri and Jason Miller give us enjoyable little rants but…
Gary and Jason:
The original “native americans” were illegal aliens. Did they have permission from the birds and bees and butterflies to be here? They invaded and killed the buffalo for food and enslaved dogs and horses. Did the ELF threaten to burn down their teepees? If modern day “progressives” are descended from Columbus’ “illegal aliens”, why don’t they deport themselves? Gary Corseri and Jason Miller could set the example!
Okay, I’ve got it. We get the “evil” capitalists to produce more guns. We get that malcontent, Jason Miller, to steal them. The ELF will then burn down all the factories. Gary Corseri will invoke Columbus’ bad karma to kill all the non-”progressive” white people with infected knobs on their television sets and all our problems will be solved!
Awesome! I love the First Amendment!
Without it we’d have to be on the streets working to imeach, rather than picking on each others opinions!
This nation was founded by radical revolutionaries with the courage to risk their lives, their property, and by extension their families, on the results of a violent confrontation with the governing power of the day, in search of simple justice. They could not trust their neighbors to be with them, and many of the Tory supporters of the empire led by a royal madman actively worked to confront, suppress and betray the revolutionaries, those who risked everything in an attempt to create a sane form of government.
The principles of our Jeffersonian democracy were an extreme new form of political aspiration which flew in the face of the commonly accepted and long-tolerated divine right of kings - no matter how insane or punishing to the population.
Quoting our founding fathers nowadays is enough to be labeled a thought criminal, particularly regarding the duty of a population to throw off unjust leadership, or tyranny. Repressing the voice of opposition is an act of cowardice on the part of the repressor, and unfortunately restricts the minor reforms that could be enacted which would provide enough salve to the oppressed to keep them from going crazy with frustration.
As a young man, I was warned of the long-term elite plan to silence the young radicals by offering two choices - go along with the system and be rewarded with a career and security, or fight the power and live in squalor or prison. I chose security, like most others, because there was still an opportunity for change as long as we enjoyed constitutional term limits and democracy. Cutting my hair was not a big deal.
Yet I have no reason to believe that the last two elections were not stolen. I have no reason to believe the official story on 9-11, particulary regarding building 7, which was apparently pre- wired for demolition, according to public video statements, shown in an interview on PBS by the lease holder on the complex, completely and strangely ignored by the 9-11 Commission report, and shaded with doubt in official FEMA reports. I absolutely disbelieve the arguments which led to our invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq, and I think I am in the majority here, yet the fearmongering has been kept at such a pitch, that even though we know we were lied to and made co-conspirators in the destruction of a people, we demand no accountablility. None.
Courage means being afraid and going forward regardless of the fear. Courage means being willing to sacrifice for the greater good, for others, or for the future. All parents and caregivers understand the incredible burdens that must be borne for the benefit of others, with no hope or reason to believe in a return on the invested time, energy, and money. Sacrifice is duty.
Our nation has become the powerful yet terrorized cowardly lion, led by the brainless yet wicked scarecrow and the heartless and power-hungry tin man. Dorothy has become a myth, she no longer travels the yellow brick road, longing for home. She is still being held prisoner by the flying monkeys. Most obey the order to the ignore that man behind the curtain, with the predictable results we see today.
One solution would be a simple psychological exam for sociopathy/psycopathy which would have to be passed by all applicants to all governmental offices - elected or appointed. If this simple test were put into place, as it is in many police departments, I belive that our nation would have a renewed chance to prosper, since this is where it seems that we have gone so terribly wrong. Is mental health screening an unreasonable qualification for office?
We have closet sociopaths at all levels of governemt - lunatics with power over our lives and fortunes. Being wrong or misguided is one thing, and subject to debate and experiementation, and correction. Being psychotic is very different, and generally not subject to correction, just pharmaceutical management and controlled responsibiities.
Otherwise, we will need a new political party, like The Democratic Republicans - founded by Washington, The Democrats - founded by Jefferson, The Republicans - founded by Lincoln, The Bull-Moose, founded by Teddy Roosevelt - notice that all these party founding figureheads of state have a place on Mt. Rushmore. Of course none of these parties were founded by one person, but by a collective of adventurers who successfully turned the system on its head, by marshalling the power of indivdual outrage using the political tools still available to us all.
Change is possible, radical reform is possible. Throwing off the chains of the past, without violent revolution is possible. There is enough awareness and outrage available- the only lacking ingredient is personal and social courage at a universal level. Look to the Pakistani lawyers who stand up and are carted off to jail. Look to the Burmese monks, incarcerated and beaten for petioning their government for a redress of grievances. Look to the American freedom riders - beaten, threatened, and sometimes murdered for asking our government to follow its own rules.
The fear will not go away, so courage is what we will need to grow. I imagine that a simple call for courage in the face of fear-mongering may be enough to join the ranks of thought criminals, unless the powers decide that such calls serve their purposes. I believe that if people are too afraid to speak out against injustice, then such injustice will continue and expand. If “leaders” are so afraid of dissent that they must criminalize it, then we are only left with a geographical construct of a nation, sugar coated with tales of past exploits when citizens actually displayed the courage of their convictions.
My mom once told me the the fight or flight response to shock was missing a component: freeze. Looking back on my experience, I realized she was right. We have been frozen since 9-11, with the fight response engaged in Afghanistan, and co-opted for Iraq. Yet we have flown from our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable for their lies and their destructive consequences. How we will respond to the next shock depends on how we have prepared ourselves. Will we allow further depradations to be committed in our name? Will we head for Canada? Will we do nothing and hope for the best? Or will we ignore the obstacles and rally behind a new political party that can at least take the first steps towards restoring our Republic? Most of our good options have been closed off by a system that does not welcome competition. Our duty is to guide our vote with our conscience, informed by vigilant self-education and awareness. This duty we ignore at great peril - for ourselves and our posterity. Vote, like your life depended on it. Many other lives certainly will.
goodbye Jason
