“Don’t wait up for me, darling.” Bush patting one of his European concubines in crime.

WSWS : News & Analysis : North America
THE TRANSCRIPT OF THE FEBRUARY 2003 discussions between US President George W. Bush and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar published Wednesday by Spain’s largest daily, El Pais, provides fresh documentary confirmation of what is already a widely known historical fact. That is: the Bush administration was determined to wage a war of aggression to conquer Iraq and was not about to allow international law or compromise settlements to interfere with its long-planned invasion. BHL, a man of strong opinions and a very high opinion of himself.
BY BERNARD HENRI-LEVY
[from the February 27, 2006 issue of The Nation]
REPUBLISHED AS A PUBLIC SERVICE
Editorial Caveat: Who is this diagnostician for the American Left?: In French and US establishment journals, Bernard-Henri Levy, or BHL, as he is commonly known, is one of the best-acclaimed “philosophes” and authors in France today. But when it comes to Henri-Levy, surely probably one of the great “poseurs” and leftist apostates on the world stage, such accolades are to be taken with a huge lump of salt. Indeed, a new biography by French journalists Jade Lindgaard and Xavier de la Porte is the first in a series of seven acerbic critiques of BHL to be released in the coming years and marks an unprecedented attack on the high-profile academic. The Caudillo in winter, fading into history with all honors and total impunity. Certainly persona most grata in Washington.
BY VICENTE NAVARRO; September 15-16, 2007
According to conventional wisdom in Spain and in the U.S., in Spain’s transition from the Franco dictatorship to democracy, it was King Juan Carlos, with the assistance of the U.S. government (first the Ford administration, then the Carter administration), who brought democracy to Spain. In this interpretation of events taking place from 1975, when the dictator died, to 1978, when the first democratically elected government was installed, the U.S. government actively supported the development of democracy in Spain. One of those sonorous buses, referred to by the author.
Paris the way it really is these days—the good, the bad, the ugly, and the plain annoying. The city has changed, warns the author. It’s no longer a Vincent Minelli “American in Paris” backdrop, and probably never was.
[CLICK HERE TO WATCH ONE OF THESE BUSES IN ACTUAL ACTION, AS RECORDED BY THE AUTHOR.]
In Paris of the Fifties, cars and trucks were already a nuisance, but at least they were silent. Because honking was illegal, and drivers universally respected the law. I realize that this is difficult to believe in this day and age, but it was so. Proof of the fact was shown in an article in Life magazine in 1957. The editors asked the Paris police for permission to drive around Paris honking for an hour or two, in order to photograph peoples’ reactions in the Paris streets. They got the permission, and got the photos of shocked anger by the Parisians, and thus provided proof of how the no-honking law was generally respected in those days. It was one of the things about Paris that made living there wonderful. Read the rest of this entry »

BY WILLIAM BLUM
“People on the March” (quarto stato)—An idealization tableau of the working class in Italy.
Editors’ Note: This is a chapter from Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II. In our view this chapter by Blum raises a perennial question, namely, who gives the US the “right” to interfere at will as if it owned the world? American exceptionalism, inculcated among the US population by ubiquitous indoctrination, is nothing more than a malignant form of collective narcissism, a runaway case of selfishness blocking a decent analysis of our own actions. How would Americans feel if a superpower many, many times stronger than the US chose to meddle in US elections to the extent we routinely have done in other countries, and even openly threaten military action if the outcome of said elections was not to its liking? Is that the way to spread democracy and build good will around the world?
As Blum himself puts it:
“If you flip over the rock of American foreign
policy of the past century, this is what crawls out …
invasions … bombings … overthrowing
governments … suppressing movements
for social change … assassinating
political leaders … perverting
elections … manipulating labor unions …
manufacturing “news” … death squads …
torture … biological warfare …
depleted uranium … drug trafficking …
mercenaries …
It’s not a pretty picture.
It is enough to give imperialism a bad name.”
Chapter 2. Italy 1947-1948—Free elections: Hollywood style
“Those who do not believe in the ideology of the United States, shall not be allowed to stay in the United States,” declared the American Attorney General, Tom Clark, in January 1948.{1} Read the rest of this entry »

How come Americans don’t take a month off every summer, even though we’d like to? Blame it on individualism.
The most astonishing revelations in Michael Moore’s Sicko have nothing to do with healthcare. They’re about vacation time. French vacation time, to be precise. Read the rest of this entry »

Sarkozy gives the victory sign
A LITTLE PREAMBLE
Many Americans are disgusted with the situation in the US under Bush, and I entirely sympathize with those who think the solution is simply to leave the US, something I did about fifty years ago, but that solution doesn’t work any more. Read the rest of this entry »

Besides the obvious facts that they can be the product of amateur terrorists, men alienated from the so-called values of the West by the constant murder and thievery practiced by the Anglo-British alliance with some European support throughout the Arab world, there’s also plenty of reason to suspect agents provocateurs or foul play in all these recent “terror incidents.” The plutocratic corporatocracy has a lot to gain by stampeding the populace into accepting a rapid erosion of their constitutional rights in return for “security.” It’s the oldest racket in town: the protection racket. These days, it’s apparently run in all continents by the world’s premier governments.—Eds.

A huge case of media hysteria was the only serious consequence of the London/Scottish would-be car bombs. Upon close analysis none of these “car bombs” would have done anything except burn up a car. That’s it–no explosions, no deaths, and no big plot. One difference though: As compared to other recent plots, riddled with government informers and agent provocateurs, these wanna-be terrorists seem to be of the amateur variety. Part I
The boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel’s Apartheid scored an important victory recently when the British University and College Union (UCU) decided to circulate “the full text of the Palestinian boycott call to all branches for information and discussion” and “encourage members to consider the moral implications of existing and proposed links with Israeli academic institutions.” The UCU resolution is in fact quite moderate. Nevertheless, it raised the profile of the campaign and elicited a round of shrill, wall-to-wall condemnations, from newspapers, foundations, politicians and governments. Shockingly, not a single media mogul (or any mogul, for that matter) is in favor of the boycott! Read the rest of this entry »
