IS OUR PRESIDENT A WHACKJOB? DOES IT MATTER? With George W. Bush at the helm of the mightiest military machine ever assembled, this is far from an idle question.

LAFAYETTE PARK BLUES Musings on the transformations of America from the idealistic 60s to our friendly fascistoid present...and the script is not yet finished.

DRIVING ON THE BONES OF GOD
"I’m quite sure by now I have pushed the reading on your nutcase meter over into the red.  Speculating on these sorts of things is a credibility risk, but one I have to take..."

KARAOKE NIGHT IN GEORGE BUSH'S AMERICA "Dissent doesn’t seep deeply enough into America to reach places like Winchester, Virginia. Never has. (Even most blacks here are still pretty much sir-ing and maaming the white folks and staying in their own shabby part of town.) Yet, unlikely candidates that Dot and Dink are for revolution, they have nonetheless helped fuel the right wing revolution with their votes..."

DRINK, PRAY, FIGHT, FUCK: HOW THE SCOTS-IRISH SCREWED UP AMERICA < HTML VERSION> The unruly, often superstitious "Borderers," says the author, may have cast a heavy and nefarious influence on this nation. Culture and genes may be fate, after all, as the Romans believed. The question is, what do we do now? Click here for the < PDF VERSION >

POOR, WHITE AND PISSED--A GUIDE TO THE WHITE TRASH PLANET FOR URBAN LIBERALs If this democacy is to have a chance, argues the author, liberals and the Left in general, must make every possible effort to understand and eventually win over the alienated masses currently in the grip of rightwing propaganda. Easier said than done, of course.

Howling in the Belly of the Confederacy How can the region of America that gave us lynching, Jim Crow, Harry Byrd, George Wallace, Taliban Christianity, David Duke, the KKK, Bible hair, Tammy Fay Bakker, congregational snake handling, the poll tax, inbreeding, and chitterlings possibly take another step back down the stairs of human evolution? Beats the hell out of me. But somehow here in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia we have managed it.

PERSONAL NOTES

jbageinFrance

Joe (L) with fellow souls Beth Arnold and James Morgan, during a

(much needed) recent vac in Southern France.

In the curmudgeon's own words: "So," you might ask, "what's a redneck Marxist doing on the French Riviera?" Well, the same thing that millions of French workers have been doing for the past three-quarter's of a century: not much, other than drinking, eating, breathing clean air, and talking to friendly folks. And, anyway, Karl Marx stayed for a month here in 1882 -- three times longer than my vacation.

More details on this inspiring and replenishing sojourn, may be found here.
