NO MEDIUM is today more overwhelmingly wasted and polluted than radio, where, except for a few oases of quality in the FM dial, mostly progressive stations of the Pacifica-type, strident and self-righteous rightwing interpretations of reality dominate the spectrum. The AM band is a disgrace, practically entirely in the hands of profiteers, religious fundamentalists and yahoos of similar stripe. Progressive radio is hard to locate. By last count, AIR AMERICA, the "liberal" response to right-wing radio, had all of 35 stations across the nation while the reactionaries and corporate feudalists controlled more than 2,000.
The dominance of this contemptible crowd over this essential medium must be resisted and eventually broken. The corporate- government alliance, which has allowed this deplorable state of affairs to materialize, is the first hurdle. And, then, of course, citizens will have to take the message past the right-wing horde, past Rush Limbaugh, past Sean Hannity, and past their thousands of clones, all of them comprising much of the despicable noise that David Brock has aptly called the "Republican noise machine."
